What is an IGI certificate?
Everything you need to know about your lab grown diamond
What is a IGI diamond certificate?
A diamond certificate (also called a grading report) is a document issued by an independent, neutral laboratory. Because the lab has no financial stake in any given sale, it assesses the diamond on its own merits - detailing its visual characteristics and unique traits without bias.
All lab-grown diamonds should be accompanied by a credible certificate. Skilled gemologists examine and measure the stone (often with a loupe or microscope) and record their findings in the certificate, covering attributes such as cut, colour, clarity and carat weight.
Why IGI Certification?
The IGI (International Gemological Institute) is widely acknowledged as one of the leading certifiers for lab-grown diamonds, particularly in today’s marketplace. It provides specific gradings for the Four C’s (cut, colour, clarity, carat) and is used across most of the lab-grown diamond industry. This widespread adoption helps buyers compare stones with confidence, knowing they're getting what the certificate promises.
Unlike some labs that only grade natural diamonds, IGI has long offered comprehensive reports for lab-grown diamonds - making it a reliable and consistent benchmark.
Our Commitment to IGI Certification
At Paragon, every lab-grown diamond we offer is exclusively IGI certified. We supply each stone with an IGI Laboratory Grown Diamond Report, and we ensure that each IGI-graded diamond is laser-inscribed with the report number and the words “lab grown.”
This inscription is microscopic (only visible under a jeweller’s loupe) so it does not interfere with the diamond’s appearance or performance.
What About GIA Certification?
The GIA (Gemological Institute of America) is hugely respected - often considered the gold standard in the natural diamond world. Yet, when it comes to lab-grown diamonds, the GIA has only recently begun issuing certifications. That means there are relatively few GIA-graded lab-grown stones in circulation.
Because IGI still dominates lab-grown certification and covers all the key specifications you need to compare stones accurately, it remains our preferred choice. We recommend that buyers look for IGI-certified lab-grown diamonds.
